In such cases, the Orthodox ecclesiastical ethos is alienated and the exact same Pharisaic practice is repeated: abuse of faith and exploitation of the human soul in the name of God. After the coming of Christ, however, a new situation was formed: Christian ethos is not that of rules and principles but that of freedom and personal communion, which comes from kenotic love. For Western Theology, one can know God only when one keeps His commandments.
